Hazardous Material Specialist   

 

 

Summary of the Classification:

Respond to credible threats involving Chemical, Biological and Radiological (CBR) incidents
 
 

Principal Responsibilities:
 
¥      Removes and disposes hazardous materials and prepares worksite to insure safety during removal
 
 
Performs many of the following responsibilities:
 
  • Operating and maintaining CBRN commercial of the shelf (COTS) detection equipment
  • Able to assist in decontamination operations
  • Participate in training exercises and drills
  • Perform other duties that may be required to support the mission
 
 
Education Required:

Associate?s degree in chemistry or a related field is required. Two (2) years experience in related field can be substituted for each year of the two (2) years of college.

 

Experience Required:


Typically, five (5) years relative experience required including categorizing, consolidating neutralizing hazardous materials with forty (40) hours HAZWOPER Certification, Middle East, DOD and Military experience preferred.
 


Special Knowledge/Skills Required:
  • Must be able to work effectively to promptly segregate, consolidate and neutralize excess hazardous materials
  • Must be able to work independently and with a team
  • Must be able to work with hazardous materials safely
  • Must be able to lift fifty (50) pounds, move five hundred (500) pounds wheeled equipment
  • Successfully pass a medical evaluation
  • Must be able to operate in a high stress, harsh and possible dangerous environment in accordance with Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulations and National Fire Protection Association
 
 
 
 
Special Knowledge/Skills Required:
 
  • Must possess the Hazardous Materials Technician Certification accredited by either the National Board on Fire Service Professional Qualifications (NBFSPQ) or the International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC)
  • Must have training on the  Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) 40 CFR 265.16
  • Must have training on the Department of Transportation (DOT) training for packagers in accordance with 49 CFR
  • Must have responder experience at the Federal (including US military), State or local level
  • Fire, HAZMAT, EMS and/or Law Enforcement backgrounds preferred
  • American Heart Associate BLS certification will be required
  • Training experience helpful
